Choosing a sink may
seem overwhelming because there are so many options - material,
style, type, color and bowl configuration. Your sink also has
to accommodate the type of faucet you want, plus add-ons like
sprayers and soap dispensers. The more you know your taste and
budget, the better decisions you’ll be able to make when choosing
your sink. Fortunately, there are lots of good sinks out there
that fit several criteria. You just have to choose the type that’s
right for you.

Stainless sinks are
popular because they’re affordable, durable and work well when
mounted under the countertop (called an undermount sink). When
it comes to choosing a stainless steel sink, you want to look at
several things. Look for the highest-grade stainless with a
really durable, rust-resistant finish. You also want to look
at the gauge, or thickness, of the stainless steel sink, because a
thicker sink is less likely to dent than a thinner sink. In
addition a thicker sink won’t be as noisy as the thinner, tinnier
one. Although stainless sinks of the past were quite noisy,
improvements in sound deadening technology have virtually eliminated
the noise problem. |

Solid surface sinks
are integrated with the solid surface countertop to form one
seamless piece. This makes for easy cleanup and low
maintenance; and no little crevices where moisture and grime can
build up. Solid surface sinks look good for years.
Yet another thing to
consider is how many bowls you would like. Look at the ways
you use your sink. If you've got two bowls, are you always
banging things against the divider? A large single-bowl sink
with room enough to hide a mountain of dirty dishes can be quite
appealing. Large roasting pans and cookie sheets can also lay
flat in a single bowl sink. How about three bowls?
Finally, you'll need
to consider how deep your sink needs to be. Most range from
about 7 to 12 inches deep. The ideal depth is what works for
you. A deep sink will hold your Thanksgiving turkey; although
if you're on the tall side, the extra bending may strain your back.
Also remember that undermount sinks, because they are installed
below the counter, will be lower than a same depth drop-in sink.
